Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain have been cast in a new adaptation of the August Strindberg play Miss Julie.

Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain have been cast in a new adaptation of the August Strindberg play Miss Julie.

The actors have signed on to star in director Liv Ullmann's adaptation of the classic 19th century play, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Chastain will play the titular character of Miss Julie, the daughter of a count, while Farrell takes on the role of a servant named Jean who she finds herself attracted to.

Samantha Morton will co-star as the house's cook, Christine.

The story takes place over a night in 1874 and tackles topics such as sexuality, class and gender.

Oliver Dungey and Teun Hilte will produce the film.

Farrell most recently starred in Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths and his upcoming projects include Saving Mr Banks and Dead Man Down.

Chastain is currently starring in Zero Dark Thirty, for which she is nominated for an Oscar, and Mama.
