Actress Anne Hathaway has spoken about her delight at winning the role of Fantine in the film adaptation of the very popular stage musical Les Miserables.

Actress Anne Hathaway has spoken about her delight at winning the role of Fantine in the film adaptation of the very popular stage musical Les Miserables.

The 30-year-old said it was her "dream" job at last night's world premiere of the film in London's Leicester Square.

She told the Press Association "It's just the sort of job you feel you should give your pay cheque back at the end of the week, it was such a dream and I can't believe I'm the girl that got to play Fantine."

The actress was asked about the efforts she went to to win the role which included cropping her hair short and losing a lot of weight to which she said "I didn't have to pull out my teeth, but no one asked, so yes, I would do anything."

Hathaway's mother previously played the same role in the first US national tour of the musical.

The other stars of the musical also walked the red carpet in London last night including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe (Javert), Amanda Seyfried (Cosette) and Eddie Redmayne (Marius).

44-year-old Jackman who plays Jean Valjean in the film said London was the perfect place for the premiere saying "It's the most French story ever written, and I guess this (London) is where it really took life. It's very exciting and the crowds have been great and it never grows old this stuff."

Also starring is the film are Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron-Cohen who play the grotesque Thenardiers.

The film opens here in early January
