Two men sentenced over sexual assault in Cork

Mr Justice Paul Carney said it would be wrong to give them special treatment because of their age

Two men have been jailed for ten years for the sexual assault and attempted rape of a woman in Cork three-and-a-half years ago.

The men were aged 16 and 18 at the time of the attack.

They were convicted following a nine-day trial in November.

Mr Justice Paul Carney recalled how the two had been driving around in a van that had been, as he put it, customised for sex, with a mattress in the back.

The victim had been at a party with friends but became separated from them.

She was drunk and could not recall how she ended up in the back of the van.

She said the attack would haunt her for the rest of her life.

For legal reasons, neither of the two men sentenced can be identified.

Mr Justice Carney said it would be wrong to give them special treatment because of their age.

He said they had behaved like predators and he could find nothing in their favour which might have earned them a lesser sentence.
